Art 240 - Professor Mata - Week 1 - Good & Bad Examples of Typography

As a homework assignment, we had to take photos of examples of typography that we thought were either good or bad. Without having all of the technical skills to decipher between good and bad examples, I mostly went off of intuition and whether or not the type was aesthetically pleasing and easily comprehensible.

Good:
This is part of a poster that was given to me by a friend. "The Amazing Spiderman 2" looks unique and adds interest to the design because of its placement. Its color helps to not distract from the main focal point, which is Spiderman. The type on both streets help to counter-balance each other.

The type is simple and unique. By splitting up the word "individual" into two parts, it further emphasizes the design's meaning without making it illegible. They are stacked such that there is a vertical line from the i, d, and l to create harmony and balance. The red 'I' and period both counter-balance each other, as well. The color choice of the letters are interesting, especially having the blue and green switched from how they would chronologically appear on the color wheel.

Bad:
The type here is a bit cliche and looks as if it came from a fake pop-up ad online. Overall there are too many different typefaces and the ad itself lacks harmony.

Although the sign does it's job of getting the message across to students, the type does not look good. The spacing between the top and bottom sections is too large and appears to almost separate the two. It is also not necessary for the world "only" to be in capital letters because it draws too much attention. "Faculty / Staff" should be larger to capture the driver's attention.
